10/31/2013-Coming in at the end of October was TechPowerUp's 21 page review of the 5-bay Thecus® N5550 tower, designed for SMB. With a final score of 8.5/10, TechPowerUp found the N5550 to be “very reasonably priced” and to have “one of the top price/performance ratios in its category.”
This NAS sets itself apart
What really makes the N5550 stand out amongst its peers is its CPU and available memory. Equipped with an Intel® Atom™ processor and 2GB RAM, double the usual amount found in similar units, expectations were high for the N5550's ability to serve multiple users quickly and efficiently. While reviewing the unit, other hardware features that impressed TechPowerUp were the various media ports (HDMI, VGA, and audio), high build quality, dual gigabit ports (“which can be linked to provide increased performance or higher reliability”), front USB 3.0 port, and LSD display (which “boosts usability”).
Beyond the material features, the N5550's software and performance were also on good form. ThecusOS™5, the unit's native operating system, was found to be “incredibly responsive” and included “all the necessary tools to get the job done well.” The supported official and third-party modules were ample, and there were even apps with which users could access the N5550 via their Android and iOS smartphones. Given a price tag of under $500, it makes sense that the reviewer found the N5550 to have “one of the top price/performance ratios in its category.”
Settling on a grade of 8.5/10, the article concludes with a recommendation to put the N5550 on your list if “you are looking for a reliable and quite fast NAS with strong hardware that won't empty your bank account.”
Thanks to Aris and the rest of the TechPowerUp team for the thorough review.
