06/24/2013 - A user generated review from German online media Hardwareluxx.de recently highlighted the Thecus® N5500. The user was looking for a replacement for his old NAS system and found it in the form of the N5550. He particularly pointed out the HDMI output and the VGA port with which it is possible to control the NAS through a TV if an additional module is installed.
He tested the read-/write- speeds of the Thecus® N5550 and came up with the following results:
The displayed speeds were registered with only a single connection to the domain controller and the PC, so that the whole system was slowed down a bit by the network capacity. Fortunately, the Thecus® N5550 supports link aggregation, so that multiple network cables can be connected to the device in order to boost the transmission performance.
The review also mentions the huge online community that develops 3rd party modules, such as XMBX or Plex Media Server, for Thecus® NAS models. They can be installed quickly and expand the list of capabilities of a Thecus® NAS.
He further recommended experiencing the smooth Thecus web-interface at this link: Thecus, Creator in Storage NAS server, NVR, DAS, Networking.
The 5-bay Thecus® N5550 boasts an Intel® Atom™ dual-core processor along with 2GB of RAM for quick response time. Some hardware highlights include an HDMI output for multimedia playback, a USB 3.0 port, and an eSATA port. Other important features include an antivirus solution provided by McAfee, link aggregation, the Data Guard backup solution and AES 256bit RAID volume encryption.
The reviewer's conclusion: “After 4 weeks of testing I am very satisfied with this NAS. It already hosts various backups and my entire media library, which can be used by all of my devices through the Plex Media Server.”
