05/22/2013-A few months ago HWP, famous online Russian media, tested the Thecus® N5500.Very impressed by its performance and design, they decided to get their hands on the new N5550 and see what it has to offer. As expected, the 5-bay NAS from the Vision series has only one thing in common with its predecessor, as the editors at HWP pointed out: “similar exterior design, but as for software and hardware, the new model is way above the old one”.
The 5-bay Thecus® N5550 boasts an Intel® Atom™ dual-core processor along with 2GB of RAM for quick response time. Some hardware highlights include an HDMI output for multimedia playback, a USB 3.0 port, and an eSATA port. Other important features include an antivirus solution provided by McAfee, link aggregation, Data Guard backup solution and AES 256bit RAID volume encryption.
After testing the write and read speeds, HWP said: “The results are very very good. At peaks the speeds often reach gigabit network bandwidth.” “The Thecus N5550 performance is enough for both home needs as well as small businesses. One important thing is that the device has 5 HDD slots, which allow users to setup RAID 5 with one extra redundant hard drive for data protection. That means that it's possible to reach the optimal combination of performance and safety. That's one of the most obvious advantages of 5-bay NASes in general.”
Besides high performance, HWP also pointed out other advantages such as a relatively low price, its setup simplicity and the robust construction of the Thecus® N5550.
Conclusion: “We would love to recommend Thecus N5550 for home users to organize their individual file storage as well as for small offices to manage their shared file space.”
