02/07/2013 – Since 2003, Cowcotland has had the opportunity to test many devices and educate its readers on the how-tos of the IT world. More recently, the French media had the opportunity to test the Intel® Atom™ based 4-bay NAS of the Vision series, the Thecus® N4800Eco. Equipped with 2GB of DDR3 RAM, sporting an HDMI output to display multimedia content, consuming 20% energy less than its older brother the N4800 and running on ThecusOS™ 5.0, the N4800Eco receives the “Bronze Cowcot” award.

Fast transfers is the one requirement that all users have in common before purchasing a NAS. Good news, the Intel® Atom™ CPU, the 2GB of RAM and the two LAN ports are there to give you just that. “Its performances are simply excellent. Indeed, on large files, we reached the saturation of the network interface, which is around 100 MB/s. With storage on two drive, the throughput is again excellent, so you can plan your purchase as a long term one and begin equipping it with only two disks in the beginning.”
A great hardware is only as good as the software managing it. The ThecusOS 5.0 offers the user a simple and well organize UI that users will be able to surf through at ease to setup and manage their N4800Eco. Concluding on the N4800Eco's review, here are the comments from Cowcotlant: “It is very feature rich and allows a real data backup, combining excellent performance and good security, thanks to its four bays, and its multiple options, he found himself close enough to a server that one might expect in an SME.”
