“The Thecus N2800 is well made and has a solid exterior”
Bookmark and Share

12/25/2012 German readers knows them well, Hartware.net has been and still is a reference for any IT news and reviews. Recently, Hartware.net took the smallest unit from the Vision series, the Thecus® N2800, in their lab and gave it a thorough examination. The 2-bay NAS equipped with the Intel® Atom™ processor certainly left a good impression. When talking about the writing speed: “There, the N2800 clearly stands out from the competition and achieved new records in our benchmarks.”

  • Good workmanship
  • Easy & quick setup and installation
  • Great functionality
  • Slick web interface with many options
  • Excellent expansion options (USB 3.0, card reader, eSATA, 2xGbit Ethernet)
  • HDMI port and media player ability
  • Very good transfer rates in writing
  • Quick encryption

Equipment, software and performance

Many aspects were looked at by Hartware.net but a few stands out. For one, the hardware is nothing less than outstanding. After introducing the innovative HDMI output for media playback, Hartware.net mentioned “The rest of the equipment is quite impressive. Thus two Gbit Ethernet ports are offered, a USB 3.0, two USB ports with 2.0, one eSATA port and a memory card reader”

As mentioned in the positive point from Hartware.net, the ThecusOS 5.0 user interface is slick and offers many options. The software offers virtually every option needed to setup, manage and get the most out of the Thecus® N2800. “Currently, there are 19 modules,… Among others, Dropbox, mail server, web server, MySQL, Rsync, Twonky Media (streaming), web disk and an antivirus app are available. Besides the official modules, a number of unofficial modules are in the Thecus forum.”

Performance wise, the Intel® Atom™ processor backed up by 2GB of DDR3 RAM does marvels for the users transfer speed. “Under RAID 1 (mirroring) the write rate with 116-118MB/s is nearly constant. The maximum read speed is unchanged and is about 100MB/s between RAID 0 and RAID 1, thus with almost no difference in speed.”
