11/29/2012 – If you need an honest review about an IT product around Asia, your best resource is the HWM magazine. For the November edition of the HWM Singapore magazine, the editors took the N5550 from Thecus® in their lab for a complete analysis. With a final score of 9.0 over 10 and going back home with the Gold award from HWM, we can say that the N5550 did pretty well.
Connectivity and modules
Two strong points of the N5550 that didn't go unnoticed are the HDMI output and the additional modules that can be installed to customize the users NAS experience. Here is what HWM had to say about the HDMI: “With the right add-on software modules from Thecus (Local Display, to be exact), users can also install the XBMC add-on, which basically turns the N5550 into a media center PC…”. “The ability to use the N5550 as a media center box is compelling, and might very well be one that clinches the deal for some.” And for the modules: “In addition, Thecus also provides modules that installs McAfee antivirus software, as well as a Dropbox client; two software add-ons that we have yet to see in many other NAS vendors.”
Equipped with an Intel® Atom™ processor and 2GB of DDR3 RAM, the N5550 provides SMB's and hardcore home users with great performance. “We tested the N5550 with five 2TB Seagate Barracuda LP hard drives, setup in RAID 6. Our benchmark of choice was the Intel NAS Performance toolkit, and boy, did this NAS fly. File copies to and from the box average 114 MB/s and 72.8 MB/s respectively…”
Once again, the N5550's great hardware, connectivity, additional features and performance receives a great review. HWM Singapore awarded the N5550 with the GOLD label and gave it a good 9.0 score. “Overall, the N5550 is a very compelling NAS for the enthusiast, as well as the SMB user.”
