11/26/2012 – Russian iXBT has recently tested the N2800 Thecus® NAS from the Vision series. This time they wanted to take a look at its big brother, the already very popular N4800. The solid review touches on the box content, exterior design, hardware, the setup process, software, and performance results.
iXBT described the N4800's impressive hardware: “The Thecus® N4800 hardware is one of the most powerful in its category. We want to especially mention the standard expansion slots useful for some specific tasks”. “The device is based on the Intel Atom D2700 processor (running @2.13 GHz) which operates with the help of Intel ICH10 chipset.”
Like many other media around the world, iXBT also couldn't help noticing the N4800's connectivity possibilities: “Thecus N4800 boasts an interesting set of ports for external devices: 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front panel, 2 USB 2.0, and one eSATA on the back panel”.
Among the standard software features, iXBT paid special attention to the unique modules T-OnTheGo™, which allows access to the NAS with the use of smart phone or tablet, and Local Display Module, which lets users play their multimedia via HDMI cable. iXBT tested the module with XBMC and VLC players and quite liked the results.
The N4800 demonstrated good performance with the highest numbers showing under RAID 5 volume setup. The read speeds reached 110 MB/s when using Intel® NASPT for testing the performance speeds.
The Thecus® N4800 is an advanced SMB NAS that shows good performance and rich features. Benchmark results show that transfers speeds are noteworthy. As iXBT concludes, “The N4800's processor, 2GB of RAM, USB 3.0, eSATA, 2 network interfaces, PCIe and mini-PCIe slots, VGA and HDMI outputs, embedded backup battery make this NAS perform well”.
