05/28/2012 – The new Thecus® TopTower Series NAS has been released with models that include N6850, N8850, and N10850 which range from 6, 8 and 10-bay servers. INTERNET Watch Japan has now had the chance to bring the 6-bay N6850 into their test labs. After looking at the N6850 from every conceivable angle, INTERNET Watch was impressed with the unit and discovered that it was a fully-featured NAS offering unparalleled functionality.
Strongest 6-bay tower NAS
Thecus® NAS devices are always well equipped, and the N6850 is no exception: “Thecus® TopTower N6850 NAS doesn't compromise on hardware specification, nestled inside the tower sits a powerful Intel® Pentium® G620 Dual-Core 2.6GHz to blaze through multitasking. To enhance productivity, memory is a whooping 2GB DDR3 RAM which offers same spec on par with a generic PC server. This specification layout allows the N6850 NAS to maintain high-performance at all times. Even though this is a 6-bay NAS, it has the same specification as most 8 ~ 10 bay NAS on the market.”
The N6850 offers incredible functionality: “The compatibility of local display really makes the NAS indistinguishable from a PC. Being able to attach a mouse/keyboard and utilize HDMI cable for display offers ultimate versatility when managing data or multimedia. Besides these features, system alert is a must have functionality. When hardware fails or login on the administrator account (wrong password) occurs, the large LED lights flash (flash red) and beeps to notify the user.”
Achieve 100MB / s at RAID6 configuration
The UI offers a dynamic screen and user friendly features when it comes down to creating RAID functions. As the Thecus® N6850 NAS is a 6-bay unit, all major RAID are available, 0/1/5/6/10/50/JBOD. However, in the review by INTERNET Watch, RAID 6 was utilized for the review.
During the speed test, “The sequential read of SMB is more than 70MB / s, we have achieved 100MB / s write speed, with iSCSI write became 94MB / s and 100MB / s read speed.” The N6850 demonstrates itself as a quick storage server that can process both reading and writing data at rapid speeds.
VirusScan and Dropbox synchronization
VirusScan, available as a no charge feature of McAfee, periodically scans the specified folder and automatically updates the definition to foster performance. “In a NAS, a full-fledged anti-virus is a big attraction.”
“Dropbox module is offered as well, this allows synchronization of data to be stored in the cloud via both Dropbox and the NAS unit itself. In the end, this allows extra data duplication in the event of an accident. As a result, data will be kept safely in the cloud and on the storage unit itself.”
The verdict: “Overall, the N6850 is a perfect NAS not only suited for business environments, but also a great storage solution highly recommend for high-end NAS users who benefit from working with PC.”
