06/17/2011 – Being one of the UK's strongest electronics websites, Hexus has been reviewing NAS for years and has compiled a very comprehensive performance chart. Last week however, they were forced to move everything down a notch to make room for the new fastest NAS on the SMB market, the Thecus N2200XXX. Even with a price far below any direct competitors, the N2200XXX blew away the competition with speeds over 100MB/s in reading and writing benchmarks and continued to top the charts all the way through. These excellent numbers were backed by excellent functionality that Hexus could only describe as “brimming with features”.
Hexus was impressed with the hardware, but of course a NAS needs more: “Thecus's hardware selection is good, and the compact box is well put together, but the true value of an all-in-one NAS server is largely determined by the accompanying software… [The Thecus UI is] a utilitarian software package that's brimming with features such as scheduled power on/off, wake-on-LAN, batch group creation, iSCSI thin provisioning, support for Windows Active Directory Server, built-in media and FTP servers, integrated backup solutions, network-attached printing and much, much more.”
The speed tests started well and got better: “The N2200XXX gets off to a storming start, with read and write speeds of over 100MB/s in Iometer's 64KB sequential benchmarks… The NASPT and File Copy Test benchmarks backup the Iometer results; the N2200XXX is a mighty quick network-attached storage solution. Multi-tasking performance is particularly impressive, with the dual-core Thecus NAS topping the charts in the HD video playback and record test.”
Hexus wrapped up the review by highlighting a few of the N2200XXX's strengths: “The Thecus N2200XXX is one of the best-performing two-bay NAS solutions we've ever tested…few two-bay NAS servers offer this blend of performance and functionality… if you're in the market for a high-powered out-the-box solution that's quick to setup and easy to maintain, Thecus's N2200XXX should be on your shortlist.”
