03/07/2011 – Thecus is traditionally a NAS company, but with stellar reviews of the D0204 coming in from all sides, it is clear that they have made a successful crossover into the world of DAS. The Australian APC Magazine has now had the chance to see both sides, Thecus NAS and Thecus DAS, and was pleased to see that though the goal is slightly different, the quality and strength of the product hasn't changed a bit.
The D0204 seems a clone of Thecus's classic N0204 NAS, but the subtle differences are quite large: “Looking identical to the Thecus N0204 NAS, we had a strong case of deja vu when unboxing the new D0204. It turns out that looks can be deceiving, though, as these are two very different devices. While the N0204 packs all of the NAS features a prosumer could ever need, the D0204 is actually a DAS, or Direct Attached Storage device. In other words, it's a portable hard drive enclosure with a couple of unique twists.”
The D0204 has small size, big capacity, and great data security: “At only 86mm by 55mm wide, this DAS packs twin 2.5in hard drives of your choosing. Two drives really are better than one, especially when they can be configured in RAID 0, 1 or Large mode. The combined maximum storage capacity is 2TB; quite a hefty amount for a palm-sized product.”
The next-generation USB 3.0 connection provides the boost that brings it all together: “Now, running in RAID is all well and good, but you need a speedy interface between the drive and your PC to make the most of it. Enter the D0204's USB 3.0 connection, promising transfer speeds ten times that of a USB 2.0 external drive.”
To get you up and running, Thecus even includes a USB 3.0 adapter for your PC: “[The D0204's] speeds are officially blazing, and are courtesy of the USB 3.0 connection; if your PC is lacking these ports, the D0204 even includes a USB 3.0 PCI Express card, with 2 x USB 3.0 ports.”
