12/06/2010 – Tiny but extremely mighty, the D0204 from storage leader Thecus® Technology packs the data protection of RAID with blazing USB 3.0 transfer speeds into a device no larger than a paperback book. In their October 2010 issue, HWM Malaysia put the D0204 under the microscope to see if this pint-sized device could actually measure up. After examining the D0204 from every conceivable angle, HWM editors dropped their verdict: a final score of 8.5 out of 10, enough to snag their coveted Silver Award!
Getting the D0204 up and running couldn't be easier: "Installation is relatively easy as all you need to do is to take out the tray, secure the 2.5” drive and slot it into the enclosure. The device automatically takes care of all the messy RAID mode business according to the dial on the rear but you can set it manually using the RAID manager software."
Equipped with USB 3.0, the performance of the D0204 is nothing short of breathtaking: "Performance-wise, this device is quite fast with its USB3 connectivity, scoring 20466 points in the PCMark05 Hard Disk Drive test suite. While this score was probably affected by the SSD we used, it's evident that the USB3 connection does increase performance and transfer speeds significantly compared to USB2 external hard disk drives."
Here's the HWM conclusion: "The Thecus D0204 is a very compact yet simple to use RAID external hard disk drive that should be a hit with people who have huge amounts of important data to backup. The device does make backup a whole lot more reliable thanks to its RAID mode support. The smaller size of the device will require less energy to power and less space compared to other external hard disk drive enclosures."
