08/11/2010 – The N4200 from Thecus® has been making waves since its introduction, and in their August 2010 issue, the editors of PC Tipp Magazine wanted to find out once and for all if all the hype is justified. After putting the zero-crash NAS through a battery of tests, PC Tipp Magazine was very impressed, awarding the N4200 a final score of 5 out of a possible 6!
The N4200's mini-UPS is a killer feature: "This network attached storage device (NAS for short) offers a unique advantage in its price class of 800 francs: The integrated battery keeps the device running during a power failure for about two minutes. This is enough to make sure that cached data is securely stored on the drives and the entire system can safely shut down."
Massive storage and easy management are hallmarks of the N4200: "This Thecus storage device comes with four free drive bays, and can optionally be expanded with 3.5" or 2.5" disks via the eSATA port. After assembly, the drives can be use to form a RAID array (RAID 0/1/5/6/10/JBOD). This protects the data in case of failure of individual hard disks. Managing the device is done through a pleasing web interface or via the OLED display on the front of the NAS."
The N4200 comes with top-notch performance: "On performance: In our tests we reached values of up to 41MB/sec write, and in reading, it held it for up to 22MB/second. This is a fast pace."
Here's the conclusion: "The Thecus N4200 is ideal for smaller companies that are looking for a lot of security for little money."
