05/10/2010 – Packed with features, reliability and performance, the Thecus® N4200 is the top four-bay NAS for both advanced users and small businesses. The editors of eWeek Europe recently brought the N4200 into their test labs to see if it really lived up to the hype. In the end, eWeek editors were extremely impressed, citing advanced security features, easy installation and management, as well as a flurry of fantastic features. In the end, they awarded the N4200 a final score of 8.5 out of a possible 10!
Installation, expandability, and management are all easy on the N4200: "Installation is possible thanks to four SATA (internal) and storage can be expanded using two external eSATA sockets (rear). There are also six USB 2.0 ports. The unit can be controlled through the OLED interface on the front, or via the browser. The small display can not only control the four hard disks and the connectivity of two networks, but also view the status of the system and manage it thanks to 4 handy buttons."
BBM and Dual DOM greatly increase uptime: "Strengths of hardware equipment include the Battery Backup Module (BBM) which has to be installed separately on first use. This will enable the NAS to continue to operate during short power failures. The system software also uses a double-DOM (Disk On Module). This will ensure the overall reliability of the NAS and the DOM that survives shall then reprogram itself to become the primary DOM. Finally, you can configure the system to use the following RAID modes: RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10."
The N4200 has no shortage of great features: "Thecus N4200 can be used as a Web Disk, FTP server, and Web or email servers. It can obviously act as a media server for all devices that support UPnP AV or simply conform to DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) standards. The N4200 can also become an iTunes server or as a download server. Active Directory is also supported. If used as a Photo Server, the interface for loading photos and albums is completely automatic, and the system allows you to view Exif data and protect album with a password."
