Data deduplication, allows for data optimization by eliminating redundant data. Based on the type of data a business operates with, businesses can save from 25-80% of their storage space. This highly efficient process allows for a smaller storage solution to be purchased, a longer period until it reaches its full capacity, delivering a serious return on investment.
How Data Deduplication works
Data deduplication involves finding and removing duplication within data without compromising its fidelity or integrity. The goal is to store more data in less space.
The process is achieved by segmenting files into small variable-sized chunks (32–128 KB), duplicate chunks are then identified, when the data is deduplicated, a single copy of duplicate information is retained. Redundant copies of the chunk then have pointers to the original. The chunks are compressed and then organized into special container files. If a file is updated, only the changed data is then saved.
While some chunks (X, Y, U and V) are uniquely being used by each file, the chunks (A, B and C) are used by both files. So in the Chunk Store these Chunks (A,B,C) only need to be stored once instead of multiple times.
Benefits of data deduplication in brief
- Increased storage efficiency
- Increased network efficiency
- Increased return on investment on hardware
Data Deduplication is ready to be used in all of Thecus’ Window Storage Server product lines with the use of Windows Server 2012 R2 series (Standard and Essentials). Deduplication can be easily installed and enabled on selected data volumes in only a few seconds. The implementation of Windows Storage Server 2016 into Thecus products line will occur throughout the year in relation to different product segments. WSS2016 will first be launched with Thecus Rackmount products, scheduled for release soon.
