11/17/2016 - Megaobzor is a Russian media outlet that covers the latest technology, innovative products and IT industry news and events. At the end of last year, Thecus announced a new NAS model built on Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials. Having already tested Thecus Windows NAS such as the W2000 before, they decided to look at the Thecus W5810 which delivers enhanced performance and 5 HDD bays. The NAS is built on the same platform as the previously tested and well-known N5810 and N5810PRO with the built-in mini-UPS, after careful scrutiny they found the NAS deserving of the Gold Editor`s Choice Award.
“The platform of this NAS is perfect: the Intel Celeron J1900 and fast memory ensure stable performance on a 24/7 work schedule.”The NAS is built on the Intel Celeron J1900 2 GHz quad-core CPU platform and equipped with 4GB of DDR3 RAM, which can be expanded to up to 8GB. Software is stored on the built-in 60GB ADATA SP600 SSD.
Settings and Booting
“Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials is already installed and to start the device you just need to plug it in. The first stage of settings doesn’t even require HDDs. They can be installed later.”The editor highlights the quick installation, which mostly requires language, license key and administrator account set-up. Most of the settings are handled by a wizard.
“There is a quick control panel as well, where one can find the general folders set-up, back-up of data and remote access. These settings are set-up the same way through a wizard. There is a separate part of the menu devoted to integration with Office 365, Microsoft Azure and InTune.”
“The Thecus W5810, as I said already, is optimized for small and medium business tasks. It is also very well suited for the small office / home office (SOHO) segment.”According to the editor`s opinion, the main advantages of the Thecus W5810 are its 5 HDD bays, the LED display on the front panel, two Gigabit LAN ports, USB ports with quick copy function, its silent operation, the already pre-installed SSD as well as the HDMI-port, allowing users to connect directly to a monitor.
“The level of performance ensures stable operation in case of non-stop schedules. The data transfers speeds are high across the board. Windows Storage Server 2012 R2 Essentials operates on full scale, connecting all PCs running Windows within an office or a small company.”
The Thecus W5810 offers a very attractive balance of speedy performance and wide functionality at this price point.
We thank Lenar Khairullin and the whole team at Megaobzor for the award.
