02/17/2010 – Powerful yet easy to use, the N5500 from storage leader Thecus® Technology is quickly becoming the go-to NAS solution for many small businesses. With its multiple storage options, system redundancy through Dual DOM, and plentiful features, the editors of Speicherguide.de, in their recent review, were extremely impressed with the unit overall.
Speicherguide.de explains some of the N5500's hardware features, including its Dual DOM design: "The system is unusual in this price class, with a dual-controller-equipped interpretation called "Dual-DOM". If one controller fails, it is reprogrammed by the other and ensures uninterrupted operation. On each controller, there is a GB of memory, acting simultaneously as a memory for the operating system and as a data cache. Externally, the system has two Gbit/s Ethernet ports and a USB 2.0 host interface. In addition, five more USB 2.0 ports are available via client and a serial RS-232 port for communication with a ready, if present, uninterruptible power supply."
Multiple storage options are a godsend for IT admins: "After switching on the device, the bundled software now picks up the communication. The selection of hard drives for a RAID group, the determination of its safety class, they are formatted with AES256 encryption and are quick and intuitive. Selectable RAID modes include 1, 5, 6, 10 and the unprotected RAID 0 and JBOD modes. If this allows the existing disk space, RAID groups can migrate online, for example, are thus converted from RAID 1 to RAID 5 or 6. You can expand RAID groups for additional drives. IT managers can replace failed hard drives during operation. You can also set up a hot spare drive. The array makes use of the SMART information of the disk drives for bad blocks on their current states and mechanical qualities. "
Here's the verdict: "The Thecus N5500 offers for its street price of around 600 Euros is more than lavishly equipped with interfaces and network support...The software is easy to use, clearly and quickly bring the desired results. All in all, a compelling offer for that price, the iSCSI, NAS, iTunes and media functions together."
