11/13/2014 –Taking a very close look at the 8-bay N8810U-G rackmount NAS from Thecus, is Wendell from Tek Syndicate. Starting off by setting the context with the question What’s in a NAS for a small business?, Wendell moved expertly onto an analysis of the hardware and software features of this award-winning NAS.
“It’s really a high-end NAS”
Thecus certainly doesn’t shy from adding a slew of features to their NAS, and the N8810U-G is no exception. “At the back of the unit we can see that it has a redundant power supply… [It] also comes with heavy duty universal rails, thanks Thecus… The best feature about this NAS is that it’s VMware certified.”
“You can use this all day long”
While “the best performance by far was iSCSI”, “the best feature about this NAS is that it’s VMware certified.”
“This is VMware certified, it’s a really inexpensive way to have your data stored on something that’s pretty high performance – especially when you factor in the 10gig Ethernet...”
Wendell was also very impressed by the snapshot feature (which is “really important for point-in-time backups”), the rsync and backups to Amazon S3 tools, as well as support for “shutdown with a connected uninterruptable power supply.”
“So what’s the verdict on this thing?”
Concluding his review, Wendell awarded the Thecus N8810U-G 4/5 stars for ease of use and 4/5 stars for construction. “VMware certification is really what nails it for me.”
Thanks to Wendell and the team at Tek Syndicate for the review.
