04/21/2014-Being in the business for more than 15 years already, Hartware has become one of the seasoned testing review websites of the German-speaking world. This time, they readied their testing lab to take a closer look at the Thecus N2310, an ‘entry-level' NAS.
As usual, the review started off with a detailed look at the hardware, with an unboxing revealing the accessories as well as the device itself – a wonderfully compact NAS in classic black. While taking the device out of the box, the Hartware's editor noted, “The N2310 only weighs 0.79 kilograms, compared to other 2-bay NAS, which usually weigh in at 1.5 up to 2 kilograms- this is surprisingly light.”
Taking a look under the hood reveals an “800 MHz Single Core SoC (APM86491) made by Advanced Micro Circuits Corporation (AMCC).” In addition, “512 MB of DDR3 RAM are built in [and] the NAS can be loaded with up to two HDDs at either 3.5 or 2.5 inches”. The HDDs can run in either a RAID 0 or RAID 1 array, or as JBOD.
This processor type is known for being extremely energy-efficient, but, leaving no stone unturned, Hartware made sure to also test this. The results showed that the Thecus N2310 was indeed (in almost all their tests) the most energy-efficient NAS device around. What was most surprising, though, was its extremely impressive performance when reading bigger and smaller files, where it is in fact the fastest NAS in its category despite its low energy-consumption.
Hartware's editor concluded: “This 2-bay NAS, is despite its attractive price-tag, very well manufactured and setting it up is extremely easy… In terms of functionality, it features everything that an entry-level NAS has to have. The N2310 positively surprises us in terms of performance. The data-transfer speeds for reading and writing are very high. Most of the times, they even outmatch more expensive devices.
Being priced at about 130 Euro, Thecus is offering a high-value NAS that should definitely be considered by price-conscious buyers.”
The review was then wrapped up with a list of the N2310's pros:
Very good performance
Good value for money
Quick and easy setup and installation
Easy to use and quick web interface
With this praise, the Thecus N2310 earned Hartware's “Editor's Choice” award!
